Giving consent for pupils’ participation

1. Invitation to research

We are inviting your class to take part in this project, where they will make a podcast episode about their experiences with language and identity. They’ll have a chance to learn new skills, and we’ll also be finding out about how they relate to their own language use and that of their community.

2. What will the pupils be asked to do?

The pupils will be asked to take part in a workshop about language and identity, and work through a series of tasks and instructions which will guide them through the process of making their own podcast episode. At the end, if they want to, they can choose to submit their episode for our competition. We will choose a small number of winners from schools across Greater Manchester. The winning episodes will be made publicly available online and may be broadcast on the radio and/or played on podcast feeds, and we will credit the creators (giving their name, school and year group). Please inform the Manchester Voices team if there are any safeguarding issues related to the names of any individual pupils being made public. If this is the case, pseudonyms will be employed to protect their anonymity.

If a pupil chooses to submit their finished podcast episode, it will help inform the research being conducted as part of the larger Manchester Voices project, and analysis and/or anonymised extracts from the submitted audio pieces may be used in future publications and presentations as part of this larger project.

Please talk to your class about the project and make sure that they understand what they’re being asked to do. If they have any questions about the project that you are unable to answer, you can either email us (see contact details below) or come to one of our online information sessions (see previous page for sign-up button).

3. Participation should be voluntary

Pupils should not be required to take part if they don’t want to, and they should be free to withdraw at any time, without giving a reason: if, for example, a pupils makes a podcast episode but does not want to submit their work to us, it shouldn’t be submitted. If they choose to submit their work but want to withdraw later, they should be able to ask you to contact us and ask us to delete their files.

4. Are there any risks associated with participation?

No

5. Are there any advantages associated with participation?
Taking part will allow pupils to learn how to make a podcast episode, and they will also learn about language and identity. The creators of the winning episodes will receive an online voucher.
