Interviewees aged under 16

You are being invited to take part in a recorded interview as part of Talking About Voices, which is part of the Manchester Voices project at Manchester Metropolitan University. To find out more about Manchester Voices, visit our website – there are loads of ways for you to get involved!

You can also follow us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook for updates.

1. Invitation to research

The pupil asking to interview you is taking part in the Talking About Voices project, and is making a podcast episode about language and identity in their life.

Your interview may form a part of the interviewee’s completed episode. Their episode may be entered into a competition, and if it is selected as one of the winners, it may be made publicly available online and may be broadcast on the radio. If you agree by completing the media release form below, your voice and name may be used in this episode and released publicly.

The submitted episodes will also be listened to and kept by the team, and they will help inform the research being conducted as part of the larger Manchester Voices project. Analysis and/or anonymised extracts from the submitted audio pieces may be used in future publications and presentations as part of this larger project.

2. Why have I been invited?

The pupil interviewing you is interested in finding out more about your thoughts, feelings or opinions about language and identity.

3. Do I have to take part?

It’s up to you to decide. If you would like to take part, you will need to sign a consent form to show that you agree to be interviewed, and a media release form to show that you agree to this interview (and, optionally, your name) being made public if your episode is selected as a competition winner. If you have questions about the project, you can contact the Manchester Voices team at Manchester Metropolitan University using the email address manchester.voices@mmu.ac.uk. If you change your mind later, you can withdraw consent (i.e. have your interview destroyed) by contacting the team using the same email address. You don’t have to give a reason for withdrawal.

4. What will I be asked to do?

You will be interviewed by the pupil taking part in the project, and they will record this interview. They will decide what questions to ask, although we have given them some guidelines on the sort of topics we want them to explore.

5. Are there any risks if I participate?

No

6. Are there any advantages if I  participate?

Your participation will benefit the pupil who is interviewing you, as they will be able to find out more about language and identity while also developing their audio production skills.

7. What will happen with the data my child provides?

When you agree to participate in this research, we will collect personally-identifiable information – your name, and any other information you give in your interview.

The Manchester Metropolitan University (‘the University’) is the Data Controller in respect of this research and any personal data that you provide as a research participant.

The University is registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), and manages personal data in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the University’s Data Protection Policy.

We collect personal data as part of this research (such as names or age). As a public authority acting in the public interest we rely upon the ‘public task’ lawful basis.

It is the University’s policy to only publish anonymised data unless you have given your explicit written consent to be identified in the research (i.e., you have signed the media release form). The University never sells personal data to third parties.

We will only retain your personal data for as long as is necessary to achieve the research purpose.

Data (digital only, no paper copies) will be stored on ManMet cloud storage and on ManMet laptops. Once gathered from schools, data will not be transferred. The winning audio pieces will be made publicly available online and may be broadcast on the radio and including in podcast feeds, and at this point the names, schools and year groups of the winning participants will be included alongside their audio pieces, in order to credit authorship (unless there is some reason why these names can’t be made public). Interviewee names may also be included, if they are given by the interviewees. If the winning pieces contain any identifying information / sensitive data other than the names, schools and year groups of the individuals who created the pieces, and the names of consenting interviewees, then this will be removed. This includes information about other people, e.g. friends and family members.

After the release of the winning pieces, portions of the data may be transcribed using ELAN, and may be used for thematic analysis in NVivo, and/or acoustic phonetic analysis in LaBB-CAT or Praat. At this point the data will be fully anonymised, with any identifying information / sensitive data (including names, schools and year groups) removed and pseudonyms employed if necessary. All data processing and analysis will be carried out by Rob Drummond, Holly Dann and Sadie Ryan, who will have responsibility for data entry, quality, and analysis.

Besides the researchers, access will be granted to authorised representatives from the University to permit study-related monitoring, audits and inspections. Nobody else will have access to the audio pieces which are not competition winners. The audio pieces which are competition winner will be publicly available online.

For further information about use of your personal data and your data protection rights please see the University’s Data Protection Pages (https://www2.mmu.ac.uk/data-protection/).

8. What will happen to the results of the research study?
