Pupils aged under 16

1. Invitation to research

We would like to invite you to take part in this project, where you will make a podcast episode about your experiences with language and identity. You’ll have a chance to learn new skills, and we’ll also be finding out about how you relate to your own language use and that of your community.

2. Why have I been invited?

You have been invited to take part because your class teacher feels it will be of interest and relevance to your studies.

3. Do I have to take part?

It is up to you to decide. If you have any questions about the project, you can ask your teacher or contact us directly (see contact details below). You are free to withdraw at any time, without giving a reason.

4. What will I be asked to do?

You will be asked to take part in a workshop about language and identity, and you will work through a series of tasks and instructions which will guide you through the process of making your own podcast episode. At the end, if you want to, you can choose to submit your episode for our competition (your teacher will submit it on your behalf). We will choose a small number of winners from schools across Greater Manchester. The winning episodes will be made publicly available online and may be broadcast on the radio and/or played on podcast feeds. We will credit you as the creator (giving your name, school and year group), unless for some reason we’re not able to do that.

If you choose to submit your finished podcast episode, it will help inform the research being conducted as part of the larger Manchester Voices project, and analysis and/or anonymised extracts from the submitted audio pieces may be used in future publications and presentations as part of this larger project.

5. Are there any risks if I participate?

No

6. Are there any advantages if I participate?

Taking part will allow you to learn how to make a podcast episode, and you will also learn about language and identity. The creators of the winning episodes will receive an online voucher.

7. What will happen with the data I provide?
